The Egyptian historian Al-Maqrizi traveled to Siwa from the 15th century and explained how the language spoken there 'is similar to your language with the Zenata'.[23]Until finally a tarmac highway was created to the Mediterranean coast in the eighties Siwa's only links with the surface environment were being by arduous camel tracks in the desert.
